May 26th, UKRAINIAN JAZZ OF THE 60s CELEBRATING KYIV DAY: MOVA band FEAT. DUBOVIK AND CHERKASHYN at Pepper’s Club.

Let’s dive into the Ukrainian musical 60s together with the band MOVA, keyboardist Yevhenii Dubovik, and saxophonist Kyrylo Cherkashyn.
MOVA explores and performs Ukrainian musical retro – songs that belong to the golden fund of Ukrainian pop music of the 1960s-80s.

In the 60s, the Soviet authorities finally lifted the ban on jazz. Ukrainian bands rushed to create jazz arrangements of folk songs and write original compositions in this style. In the repertoire of ensembles like “Vatra,” “Arnika,” “Veseli Skrypky,” “Medikus,” and others, jazz and its derivatives and related trends like swing, twist, bossa nova, and tango dominated.
FOR THE FIRST TIME for Kyiv’s Day, MOVA will perform a jazz program alongside “Kyivan” songs – a tribute to our resilient capital. You may have already heard songs like “Kyieve My,” “Na Dolyni Tuman,” “Kazka,” and “Namaliuy Meni Nich” performed by the band. In addition to the familiar songs of the 60s, there will be pieces that MOVA will perform for the first time. We invite you to discover new musical horizons of the past together.

“The colorfulness and imagery of Ukrainian music from the 1960s-80s have captivated us. Vadym Koroliuk, a guitarist with diverse genre experience, solved all harmonic and melodic challenges that arose during the analysis of musical material with his instrument. He recreated the play of string, wind, keyboard, and even percussion instruments using an electric guitar. The competence and passion that settled in us during the work on the golden legacy of Ukrainian pop music made the realization of a complex idea possible,” says Andrii Lytvynok, drummer of MOVA.
“The songs we play, in original arrangements, are enriched with a rich sound thanks to the presence of wind and string instruments, piano/keyboards. For a quartet, it’s a challenging task to convey such a broad sonic palette and immerse the listener in the corresponding atmosphere. No matter how well we do it, the quartet is not a band of 10-12 musicians,” says Vadym Koroliuk, a member of the band. Therefore, MOVA will perform with invited musicians, adding keyboards and saxophone. This will significantly enrich our sound and allow the listener to hear the beauty of Ukrainian songs with their own ears.”

MOVA is an acronym formed from the combination of the names of the band members:

Mar’yan Karpinsky – bass guitar

Olha Stetsenko – vocals, guitar

Vadym Koroliuk – guitar

Andrii Lytvynok – drums

Kyrylo Cherkashyn – professional saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and teacher. Member of bands BAH.ROMA, Yevhenii Dubovyk Quartet, and Chubareennee.

Yevhenii Dubovik – composer, pianist, session musician. Writes music for his own jazz quartet. Collaborates with bands and projects like “Tsiferblat,” Stas Koroliov, MUR, “Obiimi Doschu,” VikaVishnya, “Dno,” and others.
