Mark Tokar and Mariana Sadovska — legendary figures in Ukrainian music.
In 2014, they met for the first time and created a joint project titled “2014” — a composition for four double basses and four female voices.
In 2022, Mark volunteered for the Armed Forces, while Mariana Sadovska launched the initiative Art Against War, focusing on supporting Ukraine’s military.
Mark Tokar is a key figure in Ukraine’s jazz and improvised music scene — an artist of global standing. He has performed with such world-renowned musicians as Petras Vyšniauskas, Klaus Kugel, Ken Vandermark, and Mikolaj Trzaska. Today, he defends Ukraine against Russian military aggression.
Mark began his studies at the Lviv Music College named after Ludkevych, initially focusing on guitar before turning to double bass. He continued his education in Poland and studied with American jazzman Michael Parkinson. In 2012, he became the first Ukrainian to perform at the prestigious Chicago Jazz Festival. In Ukraine, he has participated in theatrical, literary, and musical projects, including collaborations with writer Yurii Andrukhovych and writer-musician Serhiy Zhadan.
Mariana Sadovska is a renowned singer, composer, actress, and educator. Born in Lviv and now based in Cologne, she has been active across Europe and the U.S. since 1991.
Her signature style is the fusion of authentic traditional songs with a theatrical interpretation. Mariana creates a “theater of song,” aiming to reveal the imagery embedded in the lyrics and melodies by their original performers. In her work, the past becomes present, and the regional becomes universal.
